The Vedas are the oldest books in the world
69The Vedas are believed to be the oldest surviving texts
To answer a question by hubber Stooge, who asks which the oldest books are, I have heard that the Vedas on which the Hindu religion is based are the oldest surviving texts in the world.
I found this information out many years back when I was a member of the Church of Scientology and I remember that L Ron Hubbard says somewhere in his work that he acknowledges and credits the Vedas as the source of a great deal of his inspiration as well as pointing out that they are the oldest books of knowledge we have.
The Sanskrit word véda, which means "knowledge" or "wisdom" is derived from the root vid- "to know" and likewise Scientology is defined as coming from the Latin verb Scio (to know), and is said to be an aim at total knowledge.
The Vedas cover a period of a millennium, spanning the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age according to Wikipedia's entry.

Sanskrit literature
They are the oldest Sanskrit literature and are divided into the Rig-Veda, the Yajurveda, the Samaveda and the Atharveda.
Although they are said to have been divinely reavealed in India and to have taken place there, author Professor Arysio Nunes dos Santos thinks that they actually refer to Atlantis, which according to his theory was located where the South China Sea is and Indonesia. This would have made ancient India the nearest outpost of the Atlantean civilisation.
Colonel James Churchward claimed that Mu was even more ancient and was "the Motherland." He wrote a series of books on Mu in which are said to be translations from surviving texts as well as symbols used by the people of this original civilisation.
From a personal viewpoint I believe that Mu and Atlantis once existed and it makes sense to me to think that the Vedas would be the oldest books we have that give knowledge from that very ancient time period.
Prof. Santos' theory is explained in full at his website: http://www.atlan.org/ and in his book Atlantis The Lost Continent Finally Found.

Gee - has it really been so long since I read translations of the Vedas? I'll have to dust them off and give them another read - thanks for reminding me about them, Bard!
Bard of Ely, thanks a ton for writing a hub on my request. This is a very well presented hub and answers my question.
I am curious that if civillization started in Africa, then the first words of wisdom should also have come from that land. I am also curious in knowing more about Mu. The few lines above on Mu has increased my curiosity, as I had never heard about it. Can you do a hub on Mu? Thanks again.
i am amazed that there are many people who believe the MITH of atlantis. COME ON PEOPLE!!!!! think... man and his tech were able to find a ship 3 miles beneath the surface of the ocean in the north atlantic20 some years ago. now since we are capable and more tech advanced i think it is safe to say a CONTINENT or other land mass would not pose difficult in finding. POINT BEING there is no hiding the needle in the hay stack these days.
Bard- It is so refreshing to see a westerner consider vedas as the oldest books of knowledge. As usual you have a very unique approach(about woman) and open minded attitude about eastern philosophy.
Bard - When we went to LA we went to the museum of scientology and saw the life story of Ron Hubbard. But later read some nasty things about it online. Iam not sure what to make of this church of scientology now. Even I have to read the vedas my grandpa spent his lifetime on those books and told us a few bits here and there. Thanks for the quick response.
Hi Bard,
I'd not heard about the Vedas before, although I have heard of the Epic of Gilgamesh. Wouldn't it be great if we could know what was in those books in the library at Alexandria? It fascinates me that man has both found and lost so much knowledge over the many generations.
Bard - Will go through your hub about scientology.
Amanda- Vedas are still existing. Vedas can't be destroyed easily as it is passed in a oral tradition (guru shishya parampara) i.e., from a teacher to his students by memory.
Countrywomen,
Yours is an ancient and venerable tradition. India was already civilised when my ancestors were still painting themselves with woad and living in hovels! We in the west have much to learn from you.
Amanda - Glad to know that you think that way about Indians. We in history have read about britsh viceroy's whose views were that indians were "uncivilized", "uncultured" people. Btw you can seek the wisdom from the eastern philosophy but not from me (Iam way too ignorant about spirituality)...hehe
Countrywomen,
I have had several very good friends whose families originated in India, and I have a great respect for their (and your) take on life.
Very interesting hub. I'm also interested in the Mu and am looking forward to reading that hub. I can see how it makes sense that they were the ancestors of the Vedas as migration seemed to have moved Westernly into Europe.
Great hub I really like it thanks
Very thought provoking hub as usual Steve. I love your grasp of so many fascinating subjects.
Yes Steve aren't we all!
The Sumerians too, but i believe the Vedas to be the oldest, and also tell us much about the origins of Humanity and is the base from out of which Buddhism came. The Buddha never denied the exsitence of the three Lords of heaven either (Siwa Brahma Vishnu). I am a student of sanskrit and Pali and am well versed in Hindu mythology. I am in the moment publishing a Thai version of the Ramayana (we call it Ramakian) to show the differences between the original Ramayana epic from Valmiki, and the Thai version, which was created by Royal Kings of Thailand as an adaptation.
Wow!! Thank you for posting this hub! I was just studying the Sumerian text...and thought that was the oldest text ever discovered, but this proves my knowledge wrong, and now I'm very intrigued to say the least. Peace ~ K
If anybody wants to know that how old the vedas are? The Book " ORAYAN" by Bal Gangadhar Tilak and one german scholar ( I forgetted the name) who both were worked very extensively on the astrological signs and situations prevailing at the time of vedas and found that the oldest veda Rigveda is considered to be around 6 to 8000 years old. One who want to know more about it must read the above book.
Hi friends, It is invain to seek the history of vedas because vedas contains the knowledge of 3 worlds viz 1. Cosmological 2. Physical 3. Spiritual. How can u extract human history from these sacred books?
Thanks very much for hub the Bard, its very comforting when a westener acknowledges such a fact....good write
