Thoughts Of You - an old song by Bard of Ely gets recorded and released
An old notebook
It is Valentine's Day and because of something else I had written today I had cause to rummage around in my drawers and piles of books and papers here to dig out an old notebook in which there are poems and lyrics of mine, mainly written back in the early '70s.
Amongst the verses is one entitled Thoughts Of You. I never got round to recording it and the lyrics have not been published anywhere else so I am going to share them here.
To get a feel for how the song would be performed and recorded if I ever do get round to doing this, think in terms of the feel and style of many songs on Neil Young's Harvest album - the title track Harvest or the hit Heart Of Gold.
Harvest by Neil Young
Thoughts Of You
I was walking in the sunset building castles in the sky,
I was wishing I was in those hills of gold when clouds like thoughts of you went by.
I was walking in the morning and the world shone sparkling cold,
I was still only a young man, because of you I was feeling old.
I went into a bar-room and I ordered many a gin,
I drank a lot and almost forgot until thoughts of you crept in.
Well, I met this young girl later, her face similar to yours its true,
She asked did I want to go with her but I couldn’t because of thoughts of you.
I was going to leave this city because I didn’t know what to do,
I didn’t I fear for you kept me here,
I’m imprisoned by thoughts of you.
Perhaps someday I’ll meet somebody,
Who won’t treat me the way that you do,
And maybe then it will all end,
And I’ll lose these thoughts of you.

Update - Thoughts Of You recorded at last
Since I originally published this hub I have managed to get Thoughts Of You recorded. This took place when I was visiting Cardiff last year and got together with my friend Sean Donovan who has a home studio and Heulwen Thomas who plays violin.
Heulwen is a brilliant musician and was able to add some backing to my song as soon as she heard it. So Sean recorded us playing the song with me on acoustic guitar.
Alan Craw at DMMG Records, the label I have had my music released on for the past few years, included the song in an EP release. So Thoughts Of You is both recorded and released. As you can see it is now available of Amazon too. And it all started when I came across the lyrics that had been written many years ago!
