Strange humming sounds known as hummadruz
78The mystery of an unexplained humming sound
There have been many reports of unexplained humming sounds over the years both from individuals and from communities where several people heard a noise they did not understand.
Om Mani Padme Hum
A personal mystery
As a child from around the age of eight and right up until I was 19, I went through a seemingly random series of incidents that didn't frighten me but gave me a personal mystery that I was unable to solve, and was unable to share with my family because they were unable to experience it for themselves.
I used to wake up in the early hours of the morning, usually between 2 and 3 am because there was a very loud humming or droning noise. I was always amazed that no one else in the house, or as far as I could tell amongst the neighbours, had also been woken up by it. Loud as it was I was never able to find out where it was coming from. It reminded me of the sound of a cricket that you think is in a particular place but as you move towards it you realise you can still hear it and it is somewhere else.
It sounded like some huge machine making a droning and humming sound like a giant motor.
I used to go out on the landing and in the bathroom to see if I could find where the noise was coming from. I used to look out my bedroom window on to the street outside and once I remember something really weird had happened because the normal road had been replaced with an old-fashioned one with cobblestones.
It was like a time-slip but didn't explain where the humming was from. That was I wanted to know.
I realise that some of my experiences may have been alien abduction incidents with a lot of the details blotted from my memory. I know that sometimes I was unable to move when I woke up and heard the humming. I also know I sometimes had voices talking to me but cannot remember what was said.
I know that often I would feel frustrated and mystified by the experience and not knowing what else to do would wake up my parents and sister but they could never hear anything and used to be annoyed with me waking them up about nothing as far as they were concerned.
My mother used to say I was having nightmares but that made no sense to me because I was fully awake. It was frustrating not being able to share the experience with someone who also knew what I was talking about.
The only time someone else heard the humming in my company was the last time it happened. I was 19 and living at the time in a squat in Charrington Street, Camden Town in London where I had gone looking for a girl I had met at the Windsor Festival.
The squat was very run-down and said to be haunted and I once encountered a "cold spot" there in the company of my friend Steve Whitworth, who also came from Cardiff, and who had hitched up to London with me.
Steve who woke up one night because he could hear the loud humming. Everyone else in the house slept on. Steve called across the room to ask me if I could hear what he was hearing.
I answered that yes, I could, but didn't know what it was apart from it was something that I had heard lots of times in Cardiff. It felt like a great relief to finally be able to share the experience with someone else who could hear it as well.
It was never to return and it seems that having someone else there that also heard it somehow lifted the spell. Some years later though I met a spiritualist at a college I was attending and was talking to him about it.
The spiritualist said he thought I had tuned into the "prana" and the sound of the universe. He asked if I had been chanting any mantras. Obviously as a little boy I hadn't, not even knowing what a mantra was, but that last time in London, both Steve and me had been chanting the mantra Om mani padme hum in the afternoon.
This is the mantra of the Tibetan Buddhist bodhisattva Chenrezig and is said to mean: "Hail the jewel in the lotus."
I know from the time that my friend Steve heard it at exactly the same time as me that it was not some form of hallucination or anything to do with sleep paralysis. It was also defintely not a case of tinnitus.
Moving on some more years, and I had befriended an author by name of Vee Van Dam. Vee had a series of books, including Starcraft, published by Skoob Publications about astral projection and where you can travel to and what sort of beings you can encounter in out of the body experiences, which s/he had been having since a child.
I used "s/he" because Vee believes "hirself" to be an androgynous being and part of a galactic spirit. Vee had been working with the late Robert Anton Wilson and Timothy Leary on constructing a new androgynous vocabulary.
Anyway, talking to Vee about my humming sound experiences, s/he said that "Experiencing humming sounds, of which there are various kinds, is not unusual. Often they represent pre-initiation adjustments being made to certain parts of our etheric sheath, and/or to actual Chakric points, unfolding petals which are a bit blocked or sluggish, etc."
My friend and fellow hubber, CJ Stone, quoted Vee and reported this in his book The Last of the Hippies in the chapter "Huna Druzz or Another Failed Love Quest , an Apple and a Cup of Coffee." For some reason Chris got the name of the phenomenon wrong though calling it "Huna" not "Humma."
In the late '70s I had a column in Crystal Hogben's Magic Saucer magazine, which was intended as UFO publication for younger people but had a lot of adult readers and contributors. One of these was Jenny Randles, who is a well known author and researcher.
I wrote to Jenny once to ask her about my experiences and it was she that gave me the term hummadruz, which she said was thought to be a "psychic training exercise" and had been known about since Victorian times. The term comes from "hum" and "drone" and "buzz" all combined.
I still don't really know what the source of the hummadruz I experienced was or why it stopped. CJ thinks it was my alien friends trying to get in touch with me but eventually they gave up.
There is a website about hummadruz at http://www.northernearth.co.uk/permhum.htm

thanks for the info...
I have heard this almost constantly since last winter...I took notice when I realized that most insects were not about(i had attributed it to insect noise)...it waxes and wanes in intensity..but is generally constant..
I live in an isolated locale..one time a friend did hear it and noticed it seemed more intense when he walked around one side of my house but he attributed it to damage from industrial noise(being a carpenter)..
I am always wondering where it is coming from...only a couple of times have I noticed it's absence..
thanks man, I am now going to check out the link u provided...hoping 4 some understanding...I have asked everyone I know about this and have found no leads anywhere..
again, thanx..and
peace
It is quite possible that you will hear it again. I believe this "hum" to be the sound made by celestial bodies at certain conjunctions. Sensitive people will hear hear it at times in their lives when this resonance will be of use to them raising their own vibrations. I also believe that there are many many different versions of the "hum', on different frequencies affecting different groups of people at different times, which is why some people can hear it and others dont. I often hear a high pitched noise which will come as quickly as it will go, and last anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes, and is not a constant noise like with tinnitus, sometimes it will have breaks in the sound like morse code. i believe that when i hear this, it is my guides asking me to quieten my mind and relax enough to be able to communicate with them.
Hi Steve, yes sorry for getting the spelling wrong. If you remember we did the whole thing by tape, so I never saw the word written down. That said, I should have checked the manuscript with you, but I was in Glastonbury at the time. Do you ever still hear the noise?
Yes i have heard this humming noise when i lived in London in the 1970s. It was as you described, like the sound of a very large motor. Except the walls didn't shake with this vibration, and at the time i did wonder if i was hearing it with my ears or using some other sense.
At the time many people heard this sound and it was even reported in the newspapers. The theory going around at the time, was that the Atlantians were running big machines under London.
My take on this, is that both scientists and mystics agree we live in a vibrational universe. So for some people it is possible to pick up vibrations beyond the psychical vibrations.
Glad to be reminded Africa isn't the only place weird stuff occurs. Lol. Thanks for sharing, Sir. Boom! I'm out.
Hummmmmm, when I was a child I had an illness but I don't remember which. I was in and out of consciousness for several days and that humm, buzz, fizz and hissing sound accompanied my waking moments. I heard and saw things on the bedroom wall and the hum was central to it- the images seemed to swell out of the sounds. I still hear it occasionally, usually when I'm 'out-of-sorts' or in unfamiliar, uncomfortable places. I feel it's a manifestation of a protective spirit, it acts as a kind of 'sign' that all will be well.
Interesting hub, I love reading personal experiences of wierd / supernatual things.
Hey Bard of Ely, whilst sharing similarities it certainly sounds like something other than sleep paralysis, not least because your friend also heard the humming.
Interesting stuff, I have the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum in Tibetan tattooed on my wrist and chant it regularly, I use it more as a guard against the darkness, I've never experienced anything like this though, well except the SP, but this seems to be a different kettle of fish.
Great Hub, thanks for sharing.
Another great one! I enjoy reading your Hubs! But I guess you know that since I am also a fan!
Many Blessing,
Marie...
I grew up to those kinds of sounds and always called them the Sound of Silence. Sometimes I felt like I would be deafened by them. I still hear them now, I just learned to hear around it and sort of tune it out. I'm always finding the tone though and humming along with it. I creeped out a few people doing that. LOL.
My thoughts are that the sounds are simply energy. Pluck a guitar string and the energy becomes a frequency and we hear it as sound so why not have all energy making sound? Most Americans I know are somewhat deaf and I am always hearing things before most of those around me, but I not only hear soft sounds I vibrate to it in my bones. Since leaving the Army I have lost some of my hearing due to weapons fire and large trucks, but I still hear better then most around me partly because I can still vibrate to silence.
Those who have ears to hear. . . comes to mind. I imagine it has to do with what a person is focused on and any number of other factors such as personality, openness, spirituality, and such. Some people are simply more aware than others.
There is also body type to consider as much like a crystal, shape and make-up doubtless affect vibrations. Would overweight people be less prone to vibrational sensitivity due to their excess cushioning? How about those who wear large amounts of various rocks and crystals? Would they be more likely to feel internal vibrations as they amplify ambient energy through their charms and jewelry? There are simply too many variables and not enough controls to thoroughly test my theories at this time.
I think that, as with all things, the amounts and type of jewelry can affect you either way on the natural paths. If your eyesight is poor you wear glasses to improve your vision. For most people I do think it would disrupt their paths as they are not likely to choose something that enhances their natural energy, but if you know what stones resonate with you in a positive way and where to place them to maximize their effectiveness than I can only think that it would benefit you.
I think that I may of had a simiular experience when I was 17/18. I was woken up to a loud humming noise(like if you stand next to an electrical pylon, but 10 times loader) and small lights, colours of red, green, blue, white, flickering all over the curtain, but the lights did not light up the bedroom, only on the curtains, then within seconds there was a bang everything stopped. I jumped out of bed and woke everybody up, but no one saw or heard anything. My mum and I even looked outside because I was convinced something had crashed there was nothing. I have never experienced it again, but the mystery has never been solved.
Hey there Ive heard these sounds as well right after waking up on many occasions. Ive been meditating for years and its usually the morning after a long meditation when i'd hear the humming. Ive came to the conclusion that the humming I heard is linked to a personal e.t. visit usually a near by craft checking in on you and your journey here on earth. My story goes further but I dont want to go into detail if this hasnt been a part of your reasoning for hearing the humming noises.
i have experienced the same humming sensation that you described ever since i was young, i actually primarily when i was a child. also although it may be something completely different, one early morning after a long night of sex i sat in a meditative state playing a game, i was tensing and releasing the muscles in my jaw that produce that clenching sound/vibration in your ears, and all of a sudden i felt this extremely loud and powerful electrical pop inside my head, it was like the sound a shock would create. i have never felt this since.
last night i woke up to super loud humming noises, and i was at a loss but ive been doing a lot of research on past lives and the cosmos so it did not feel like a random happening to have that occur. have you ever played taboo? did the noise sound like a super loud buzzeR
also- thanks so much for writing this article. it has giving me another stepping stone.some people already think me crazy and sometimes i wonder for myself. Im not even sure if I "head" the noise, i just know it was so loud. Thanks for the insight!
I've been hearing humming noises from the age of fourteen but then it is most a time from machines in factories and not some kind of ESP. But on few occasion, i heared a noise that sends shiver running through my spine because the sound was more like a wailing from an invincible baby. It kept coming to me that i was forced to relocate, thinking that my place of abode at the time was haunted, but still, it kept coming, until one early morning after another ordeal the previous night, my younger brother woke me up through phone to complain about hearing the same noise, and that was the last time that i heared the noise including my brother. One mysterious thing is that wile i was hearing those wailing, as loud as it is, nobody else among my neighbours heared it, not even for once. The world is full of unsolved mystries. Another important hub, bard of ely.
Excellent Hub, Bard of Ely!
First of all, you had my full attention and it was an effortless, flowing read. Second, for others of us who haven't had the same experience you had but have had similar ones, your article is like finding a fountain in a desert. I love the Mahayana Buddhist Tradition. Seeing your photos was really comforting and beautiful

Bard - wow! Strange indeed. I've seen strange things I can't explain, I've even detected smells that had no obvious source but never sounds, humming.
What an interesting life you've led.
