New entry in YouBloom Music Awards - Always Look So Fine

The YouBloom Song Contest is now called the YouBloom Music Awards and once again I have entered one of my songs. I recently got through to the semi finals but unfortunately Bob Geldof and the panel of music industry judges didn't choose my song to go through to the finals. 

However, undeterred I believe in working with the old motto of Try, try and try again, so I have entered another of my songs, this time in Heat 1 of the Q3 level of the song competition. My song is a Pop/Rock number entitled Always Look So Fine. 

Back in the '90s I had a band called the Flowers of the City. We were named after a line from a Bob Dylan song To Ramona which goes "the flowers of the city though breathlike get deathlike at times..." It was also making reference to my hippie image and the Madchester Second Summer of Love music scene that was going on at the time.

I recorded three songs with the band and we used to regularly play them on the local circuit, with the Chapter Arts Centre bar being a venue we appeared at a number of times. Flowers of the City were myself on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Ade Roper on bass and backing vocals, Mike Slee on lead guitar, Howlin' Howard on harmonica and backing vocals, and Martin Espley on drums. All the musicians played in other local bands are were a big part of The Meltdown music club that is still going today.

Always Look So Fine is a Brit Pop love song that is basically saying that whatever the woman I love is wearing makes no difference because she always looks stunningly beautiful to my mind's eye.

The song has the line "I've seen you in black punk clothes..." and because of this I have used an old photo of two neighbours of mine from the time I lived in Ely council estate in Cardiff to go with my song. Heather and Maria were sisters and were very into being part of the Punk Rock scene. Crass were one of their favourite bands. They always dressed in black clothes and dyed their hair with the very shocking Punk Pink from the Crazy Colour hair dye range. I thought they would make ideal models to illustrate Always Look So Fine.

Voting has begun for the songs in the current heat and those entrants that make it into the top 3 will qualify to go through to the next round. Naturally I am hoping to be one of the winners of this heat!
