Las Galletas is a fast developing Tenerife resort
60Canary Islands atmosphere
Las Galletas began life as a fishing village but has grown into a popular resort town on the coast of the south of Tenerife. Although it has much to appeal to tourists it still has retained much of the traditional Canary Islands atmosphere.
Las Galletas actually means “The Biscuits” in the Spanish language and why it was called that remains unclear. It is within very convenient range for the Reina Sofía Airport for Tenerife South where most planes arrive that are bringing new visitors to the island. It is also close to the more well-known resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas, which are also situated on the sunny southern coast.
Las Galletas marina
Costa del Silencio
Las Galletas has a harbour and a fairly recently built marina from which cruises operate, as well as a range of restaurants that serve fish and seafood dishes in keeping with the past history of the village. Actually, freshly caught fish is still on sale from stalls on the seafront there too.
Las Galletas is right next to the area known as Costa del Silencio ("Coast of Silence") which is mainly made up of community housing complexes. Lots of people who have been looking for Tenerife apartments find them in Las Galletas itself or in Costa del Silencio. Many British ex-pats live in the housing complexes that are a main source of Tenerife accommodation in this part of the island.
Las Galletas has two long beaches and one of these is very popular with swimmers and sun-bathers, even though it is right next to the road and has a lot of pebbles on it. The other main beach is in front of the promenade which is lined with restaurants. This is a great place for having a meal and a drink and watching the sun go down.
Las Galletas in Tenerife
Dive centre
The town itself offers a very wide range of shopping including a health store. There is also a dive centre which organises diving trips off the local coast. Las Galletas has a bank and a large post office, as well as plenty of small businesses.
Because Las Galletas is situated on the coast in the south of Tenerife it usually enjoys a lot of excellent weather, and, of course, this is yet another reason it has become so popular with visitors to the island. Las Galletas is well worth investigating for a day out if you are on holiday in Tenerife.
