Is the world really what we make it?
66Positive thought versus negativity
There has been a lot of recent publicity and discussion about The Secret and the Law of Attraction, which theorises that what we focus on we get or attract to us in our lives. This means we get back both good and bad things depending on what we have been thinking about consciously and unconsciously. The universe doesn't deal in terms of good and bad but simply supplies what we ask for, and by asking for, thinking about counts, as does praying for or conducting elaborate visualisation rituals to focus on your desired goal.
Basically it can be seen this way: the world we live in is made by the thoughts of us all. It is a mixture of good and bad things served up to supply the wants of everyone. This is why it appears so crazy because the majority of people are not aware of this "law" or how the universe is working.
Others are and know it can be used against those who don't have the knowledge. By that, I mean that populations can be kept scared, depressed, downtrodden, subservient and controllable by ensuring they get a daily diet of bad news, and plenty of "entertainment" that is full of horror, killing, madness etc. By getting the masses to see and think about this stuff daily they will think about more of the same and generate more of the same.
For example, if enough people think war is a necessity then war will be created and continued. If people think there is always war going on somewhere, or it is a "human condition" then war will be the result. If people think that there will always be a lot of poverty then a lot of poverty there will be.
Even if the thought is that sickness and "disease is a terrible thing", then sickness and disease is what the world shall get and it will be terrible just like was asked for.
All of this translates to a
personal and individual level. People who are unlucky in love - and I
have been one of these, and I know that I am guilty of making this
mistake - often say things to themselves and others, like "nobody ever
wants to go out with me." Then, of course that is the result they get -
no one wants to go out with them. Or "I am feel like I've been left on
the shelf," only to find this applies to them in the future.
Or, "my girlfriends/boyfriends always end up dumping me or cheating on me." Coming right up in your next relationship - someone who will cheat on you or dump you.

Examples of the Law of Attraction
I can see so many examples of how this applies in daily life. I was thinking about unsuccessful musicians, singers and bands, of which there are millions, but only a small number ever become a great success.
How many of those that fail to make it into the bigtime spend a lot of time thinking about how they never get signed, or how no one ever comes to their gigs, or nobody buys their releases, or no one ever votes for them in band contests?
Another example, I have often seen as a musician, and have suffered from this problem myself, is when the idea put out there is that sound engineers at live gigs always sabotage the sound. Coming right up: a messed up sound!
It can be thought of as positive thinking versus negative thinking but really it is neither because the universe does not make such a division. If you like, think of it this way - we are all incredible magicians who can create anything we want with the magical help of the universe that supplies what we see in our minds.
And that is why in occult practice the art of visualisation and focusing on your intended goal is the most important key to success. Everything else in rituals and ceremonies, in symbols and so forth is to help you stay focused.
However, the slightest doubt or counter-intention can destroy the success of a particular wish to the corresponding degree. I recall when I was in Scientology, I was learning about what L Ron Hubbard called "postulates" and "counter postulates." Of course this extends further to the minds and the will of other people. By this I mean if you visualise and desire to achieve something but then share what you are trying to get with other people who don't want you to achieve this, or simply don't believe it is possible, then their counter intentions override your own.
How all this works also is how mind-over-matter works or fails and how telepathy and mind-reading does likewise. This is why for someone like Uri Geller, whilst he knows he can sometimes achieve incredible results and his fans know this, the problem he can encounter is that a large majority of people do not believe in him or believe that such results are possible.Their lack of belief counters his magical command.
Some sceptics like James Randi are deliberately willing that Uri's "magic" doesn't work and so when it fails they can then say there you are, I told you he was a charlatan. So it makes it that much harder for him, and so it is for everyone with everything they aim for and desire.
In another hub I was discussing mental illness and I have had friends who have been very ill with depression and schizophrenia, who I have seen many times get the results of negative thinking.
I have a friend called Phil, who is actually a very talented singer-songwriter, but he never got anywhere with his music and sank into depression and alcoholism. He used to talk about how "stressed up" he was and how much he was "suffering." He used to complain he was treated unfairly in folk clubs, and he was treated unfairly in folk clubs.
I have even seen him complain about being ignored at a bar when it comes to getting served, and sure enough he really was getting ignored. So then he would use these things as examples of why he was stressed and suffering and of course, the Law of Attraction would respond with more of the same. It's a time loop and a vicious circle!
That's the real trouble we get caught in these loops of bad things occurring in our lives and don't realise it is us that is making these things happen. The more we think about how hard done by we are, the more reasons we are given to feel like this.
Janice, whom I wrote of in the other hub, used to be frequently paranoid and depressed and went on and on about people picking on her and people stealing from her and things going wrong in her life. It was hard to believe the world could really be as bad as she painted it until you saw that she really was getting all this bad stuff going on.
Mind-over-matter too? Yes, indeed, I have seen negative mind-over-matter. I remember at one point in a house we lived in, Janice always complained the washing machine would not work for her. I couldn't find any reason why not until one day, having thought about how her negativity was manifesting negative results, I said, "Jan, can you please get out of the kitchen while I see if I can fix it?" Without me touching the machine it came on as soon as she left the room. I saw that and never forgot it.
What I think was going on there was Janice was putting out the command or thought-pattern: "this washing machine does not work" and it was being obeyed.
Again, in my past studies of Scientology I came across a bit where Hubbard was talking about how a "thetan" (Scientology word for spirit) can cause machines to work or fail, and I thought, yes, that is exactly what I have seen. I wrote a "success story" about this realisation.
I realised today that I have been caught by a pattern here of all the others who put things off until tomorrow, or "mañana", as it is said in Spanish. It is so common on this island that I wrote a song about it in protest, but what are the results I am getting now in several of my dealings with other people here? Yes, what I want I am having to wait for. The results I want have been moved to another day and I have been unintentionally probably making it worse by practising my song and thinking about it.
The reason it is so prevalent on the island could well be that it is accepted and being thought about by many other people that stuff never happens now but mañana. This is what I mean about how this Law of Attraction stuff works on a personal level and collectively.
I think I need to write another song saying what I want and that I want it now!
The amount of negative and scary emotional material out there in the way of news stories, literature, song lyrics, films and TV and other forms of art and media is staggering. This is what we are exposed to daily and what we are brought up with and then we may wonder why the world is full of killings, war, death, destruction, sadness and insanity. I would suggest it is because we are collectively making it that way. We are being programmed into accepting this as normality when it is anything but!
One of the reasons I loved working with the small children recently so much was that for a few hours a day I was in the company of happy younger people, whose minds were not filled with sadness, fear and worry. It was a wonderful experience being in their presence.
This is how it should be. This world is meant to be a paradise full of happy people but it cannot be until enough of us stop asking the universe to supply us with the stuff of nightmares and stop responding to the controllers of the world who feed us this miserable diet. As of today I am making some changes to my life.

Excellent Hub Bard! I think you have put your finger on it. We are what we think!. Every time we go the supermarket or shopping centre I say to my dearly beloved "My parking spot will be outside the door" and is, even on the busiest days. Sometimes I have to wait for it ,but it's there, and lots of other small things like that tend to happen for me. But it is very easy to slip into a negative spiral. Thanks for the reminder "banish the negative thoughts!" I have also seen that "washing machine effect" too.
This is a truth we can't hear enough of! Ever since I read about the Law of Attraction I've been trying to focus on positive thoughts, and it's not always easy. Thank you for that tip on counter-intention - that's something I've never thought about. Will have to learn to be careful what I say to whom.
Hi Bard.
You wonder about whether channelling stuff is true or not. I don't think you can say it is all the same. Yes, some channelled stuff is terrrible, others is all right and some of it is brilliant. The Channelled stuff i like is the originial Findhorn stuff, The Seth Material, channelled by Jane Roberts, A Course In Miracles, and the Abaham stuff channelled by Esther Hicks.
All of it is more or less says the same, said in different ways. The message is that, "we create our own reality". This to me makes sense of the confusing world we live in. If all of us are individually creating our own reality, then it means that other people can live in a different reality than the one we are in.
So it means people can get together and create a reality where there are Alien reptilians, but if you don't want to buy into that sort of reality, then you can have a realtiy where alien reptiles don't exist.
If we do live in a world of mind, then reality as we know it, is not fixed or frozen. We can see this in the world of science where scientific facts and beliefs are always changing. Every new generation wants to make changes to our collective reality and this desire for change, changes the reality we are living in.
Hi Bard
Trying to find the 'truth' of anything is virtually impossible.
Even in science they cannot do that. Have you heard about the problems in Quantum physics? For centuries scientists have argued whether light was a wave or a particle. Some experiments showed it was a wave while others showed that it was a particle. Then in the 20th century they tried to answer this question once and for all. But in this experiment done on photographic plates, light behaved like a particle while it was being observed, but when it wasn't being observed by a humans, light behaved like a wave. In other words, the effect of observation was changing the outcome of the experiment. Read, "In Search Of Schrodinger's Cat" by John Gribbin.
The fact is, that it depends on what these channelled people say, as whether people will judge it to be true or not. I would suggest that this Peggy Kane read something from a Channelled work that said Alien Reptiles were a load of nonsense, so because it didn't support her belief, she condemned all Channelled works. The Christian Church done the same thing, at one time you could be burnt as a Witch for being a medium. Simply because mediums didn't support the teachings of the Church.
If you like what is being said, then it is obviously true! If you don't like what is being said, then you are free to reject it as being untrue.
ALien Reptiles are a very dramatic concept and if you enjoy drama like this, then you will be attracted to these ideas. And if you continue to think about it, then in time, (because we do create our own reality by what we think), they will become part of your reality. I am not surprised to hear David Icke has been taken over by them. If he keep on writing books about this and giving lectures on it, then this reality will take him over completely.
Truth is nothing more that a choice. The more you think of something, then it becomes a habitual thought, which becomes a belief, and in time the belief becomes a fact.
If you do not no longer want Alien Reptiles as part of your reality. Then get interested in something else! Keep away from people who believe in such things and choose a more positive reality.
Hi bard
The title of this hub is called, "Is the world really like what we make it?" and for my part i would say yes.
I would agree there are a lot of horrible things going on in the world and i certainly don't like them. But i now question whether attacking people and telling them that they wrong, is a good idea. After all wars are fought over different ideologies.
We live in a world of thousands of different 'truths'. And to say one truth is the 'real truth' is questionable. And it just makes things worse, when people argue and fight over who has the 'truth'.
There are many forms of the truth i don't buy into. I don't buy into the Christian 'truth' or the Islamic 'truth' or David's Icke's 'truth' or even the scientific truth. I've been part of 'New Age', Occult and Flying Saucer Groups and met many people with very weird and wonderful beliefs, and i have noticed the way reality does seem to change, depending on the group mind of the cult you happen to be in.
As far as i am concerned, reality is not fixed, is it fluid, and reality changes as we change our thoughts and beliefs. I know some people don't want to believe this and feel more comfortable with a fixed and solid reality.
But as you said, you wrote a protest song about "mañana", and by thinking about it, you make the situation even worse. So if you were to write happy songs about how wonderful your life is, would concentrating on these happy thoughts make your life better?
Personally i have read many of these conspiracy theories and thinking about them made my life worse. I began to create a reality where i felt everyone was out to get me. This is why i reject David Icke and the rest of them. The reality they are creating, from my experience, is not a very pleasant reality, and one i prefer not to have.
I think the solution is to allow people to have their 'truth' and not demand that they have your 'truth', but whether people can do that is another matter. I suppose while people believe that there is only one truth and they have got it. Then they cannot understand why other people have a different truths.
I agree with you that the media has a big impact on what people believe to be true. So i do find it frightening the amount of negativity that comes from the media.
As for Beck getting a big hit from such a negative song. I think there can be many explanations for this. I think it does depend on how much he identifies with the lyrics. Your song came from personal experience so you really identified with what you were singing. Other song writers may not do that. They may create lyrics, they think will be popular and not take the song from their personal lives. He could of been thinking about other people he knew, who were losers and had a death wish, when he wrote and sang the song.
Another possibility is that he is reacting against the lyrics of the song. He may of thought he was a loser once and then reacted strongly against this idea. Why he felt so strongly about this, is suggested by the lyrics that say he would rather die than be a loser. So when he sings it, it inflames his emotions to think that I would rather be a winner than a loser.
It's difficult to tune out the world and so the negative energy is going to seep in. The trick is to keep your positive energy higher than your negative energy. I think a lot of people try to focus on positive thinking and improve their outlooks like it's a sprint; they think you can just start this and stuff will fix itself. It's like any religion, in my opinion, it doesn't work if you are looking at it. You have to practice it from the true places of your heart, soul and mind, and the results will follow. If you try to monitor your success in something of this nature, you will begin to evaluate success (and it's counter part failure) thus bringing the potential for negativity into your "attempt." Probably makes no sense. LOL.
Anyway, I am thinking positively about beer and Friday nights, and I know that because I have such a fantastic attitude about THAT, it WILL happen. (I wish I could make that work for getting super models to appear in my shower, but I'm still working on it... maybe I'm watching for results too much lol).
A very interesting rumination you got here, Bard. :)
There is absolutely Truth in this law of attraction and you gave many good examples of it in your excellent Hub. Of course, it is only true to a point. If you and I both projected ourselves winning a one-winner lottery for a new car, obviously we cannot both be correct in our projections. Like most things, there is a valuable kernel of Truth in the Secret.
Hi Bard
I think the important thing about people like Peggy Kane is that she has create a exciting drama. And that is how she has hooked people into believing in her stuff.
I've met these drama queen types myself and what gets to me is that most of these dramas are so negative. What i want to know is why can't we have more positive dramas? In most of the dramas in books, films or TV it is mostly all negative, until the contrived happy ending.
I suppose we all want drama in our lives of some kind, but i suppose we need to be careful not to get so carried away with it, so that we cannot find the happy ending we desire. I suppose it is like football, it is only suppose to be a game, but some people get so involved in it, that it becomes to them, a matter of life or death. As Bill Shankly once said, "People say football is like war, but it is not like that, it is far more important."
The point is that if we get hooked into dramas that make our lives miserable, then we should get out of them. But most people don't know how to do this. For instance many people think war is a very exciting drama, but when men find themselves in a situation of having to kill each other, then they find it is not so much fun anymore.
I sometime wonder if life on Earth is like a video game. We come to this planet to play these exciting dramatic games, but get so caught up in them, that we lose sight of the fact, they are just games.
I remain a sceptic on many things, open minded, but sceptical. Still I have always been fascinated with some of the things you talk about in your hub. You live in the Canaries? I live in Madrid, near Vallecas, the old Gitano area (now mostly a U.N. of people!)
Hi Bard
I'm glad to hear that David Icke recognizes that we live in a world of illusion. It would be awful if he thought all this reptile stuff was real.
What gets to me with the Esther Hicks stuff, is that she says, "the world is not broken", "you are not here to fix a broken world". Which i didn't like when i first heard it. Because it takes away some of the fun of living on the world, if you are not scheming away to find ways to save it!
I suppose many of us want to be superheros and save the world. David Icke and Peggy Kane want to save the world from reptiles while i want to save the world from patriarchy.
So if we are not out there trying to save the world, what other game do we play?
Yes, it is. I've had a great time with it so far, a few rough patches here and there, but I consider myself extremely lucky. And I am.
You have just pointed out the essence of attraction and you did it boldly. The world is a reality that created by consciousness, by all means all minds that exist in this world.
There are so many myths that have become real now, thanks to all believers. Well, I'm not saying that this is good or bad because in this marvelous universe, there will always be perception and judgement. What we see true will become true although the universe doesn't judge.
Thanks for your insight, appreciate it very much.
What do you think of the statement "Fath without works is dead" My personal belief if,followed by my physically doing something as a result of that belief will help bring it to fruition.Without that physical work, based on my beliefs it would probably not happen ,and if I get others to believe as I do and they do it in conjunction with me it would be even more likely to become a reality.

I agree with most of what you say on this hub. Yes, we do live in a world of mind, and it is unfortunate that we all have been brought to believe we live in a material world.
I first came across these ideas through Christian Science, though at the time i thought Mary Baker Eddy's views were too extreme. I went on to read other 'New Thought' writers as well as getting mixed up in the Occult and New Age movement. Unfortunately i wasn't fully convinced and spent half of my life trying to serve two masters. Some times i would believe that we live in a world of mind while other times i believed we lived in a material world. Because this is what i was brought up to believe and is also the belief of most other people. If you try to tell most people we don't live in a material world but a world of mind, they think you have gone mad.
The stuff i look at now is the Abraham/Hicks teachings which i find explains things so clearly. This is channelled stuff coming from a medium called Esther Hicks. She was in the original "The Secret" film, but when it started to become mainstream she was censored as it was considered her teachings was too extreme. She says directly that we live in a world of mind without any compromise.
I agree that the amount of negativity on the TV is shocking and seems to be getting worse.
