David de Rothschild fans have a Facebook site

Updated on February 10, 2016

How it all began

It all began when I listened to the Alex Jones show when he had David Mayer de Rothschild on as his guest and was very rude to him. I found myself siding with David and ended up writing a hub here all about it.

This led on to me getting David's book The Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook , and finding I agreed with most of the points he raised. I wrote a review of it and published it here at hubpages.

David is an adventurer and environmentalist who had come up with the brilliant idea of building a catamaran made entirely from recycled plastic bottles and calling it the Plastiki, making reference and tribute to the late Thor Heyerdahl's Kon-tiki.

David's plan was to sail across the Pacific Ocean over a period of months to raise awareness about recycling and how a material like plastic could be used in an innovative way, and about the ongoing dangers of marine pollution caused by plastic. He knew that his name as a famous member of the banking family could be used to generate the publicity to make the world aware of the very great problem and danger that discarded plastic creates.

There are five gyres in the oceans of the world where plastic trash is accumulating and because it is not biodegradeable all it can do is eventually break down into very tiny particles that get swallowed by sea creatures and then enter the food chain. If this wasn't bad enough plastic absorbs very toxic chemicals and these can leach out and poison anything which has swallowed the plastic.

Other animals such as turtles and seabirds such as albatrosses mistake plastic bags and other items for food and this causes much suffering and death. Albatross chicks often die because their bellies are full of plastic objects fed to them by their parents.

David's plan is to sail the Plastiki right by the worst of these oceanic patches of rubbish, which is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and is said to be twice the size of Texas.

It was originally due to be launched last year but after various problems and delays the Plastiki eventually set sail in March 2010.

David de Rothschild on Twitter

What happened next in my personal life was that I had a friend called Jill staying in my apartment in October to look after my cat. I was going back to the UK for a week.

Anyway, when I got back to Tenerife, one day I was talking to Jill about how I intended getting in touch with David. We had been out walking but when we got back to my place and put my PC on there was a message in my mailbox saying "David de Rothschild is following you at Twitter".

And he was. It was a moment of synchronicity. It was a sign for me to follow!

So I added David and sent him a note thanking him, and then the day after that his Adventure Ecology site was also following me.

A week or so after that I sent David a message at Twitter about some ideas I had for using recycled plastic bottles as rearing containers for Monarch Butterfly chrysalises and got a brief note back from him. We had begun corresponding, and for me this confirmed that I was meant to be helping him.

I published a hub about the Plastiki and was excited to find that David had published the link on his Twitter site.

Then, a couple of months back, I became friends with Yasmeen Stewart on Facebook. As a matter of interest we met as mutual friends of James Rothschild.

Yasmeen likes butterflies and has some photos of Swallowtail Butterflies in one of her galleries. We got to talking about these beautiful insects.

We also discovered that we both thought very highly of David de Rothschild so I suggested why don't we do a fansite for him between us?

Yasmeen thought it would be a good idea to let him know first so I did so at Twitter and got his approval.

We have been posting videos of David as well as news stories about him and the Plastiki.

David had posted a tweet at Twitter before they set sail saying he knew he was going to miss hearing birdsong whilst out at sea. This was something I could well understand.

I sent him a message saying I could sympathise over that but to cheer him up a bit I wanted to let him know that after just a couple of days we had got him over 500 fans. That number is now more than 5,000 and rising.

NB: If you have a Facebook account please join David's fansite - see link below.
