Concert for Ocean Aid is an idea

An idea based on Live Aid and Band Aid

I don't know about you but the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the appalling way the clean-up and stopping of the leak has been handled has really depressed me. I cannot stop thinking about all the billions of sea birds, turtles, dolphins, fish and other marine creatures that will have lost their lives because of this tragedy, and the damage to the coast and marshland, as well as to the livelihoods of people who live in the States affected, is immeasurable.

Besides this ongoing ecological disaster there is the very serious danger being caused by marine pollution by plastic. Right now, as I type this, David de Rothschild is halfway across the Pacific Ocean on a catamaran made entirely from used plastic bottles and called the Plastiki. One of the main purposes of his expedition is to raise awareness of the pollution of the oceans by plastic waste.

All over the world people who are disgusted by what has happened to our seas are saying something must be done. I have been thinking deeply about it all and have come up with an idea based around the success in the past of the Band Aid charity single and the more recent Live Aid rock and pop concerts.

Ocean Aid the concert

The original idea for Band Aid had been hatched by Sir Bob Geldof, who with the help of Midge Ure, had assembled a collection of pop and rock singers to lend their talents to a charity single entitled Do They Know It's Christmas? It was recorded and released under the collective name of Band Aid.

It swiftly became a number one single. Singers involved included Bono from U2, Boy George, George Michael, Bananarama and Paul Young.

From this in 1985, Live Aid followed on and in 2005 there was Live 8. These massive charity concerts featured appearances by a host of internationally famous pop and rock stars and were screened worldwide so were seen by billions of people.

If such events could be organised to help benefit the starving and poor people of the world then why not a similar effort being made to raise awareness about the dangers to our oceans and to raise funds for their protection?

As to where the money raised would go that would have to be worked out. There are activist groups like Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd that work on marine environmental campaigns but there are many more organisations that are concerned with keeping the oceans as they should be. Perhaps a new one could be set up inspired by the growing need for something to be done to protect the oceans and their ecosystems?

It is not just plastic pollution and the British Petroleum (BP) oil spill in Gulf Of Mexico that is killing marine life. Overfishing, bottom trawling and over-acidification of the seas are all wreaking havoc too. Because the water is becoming too acid coral reefs are disappearing and along with them go the complicated and very beautiful ecosystems of life that depend on them.

Anyway, having come up with the idea I did a bit of "Googling" to see if the term Ocean Aid was already being used. I was very pleased to find that a team of people have thought like me and that Ocean Aid 2010 is already under way.

That doesn't stop a much bigger global event or series of concerts at stadium-sized venues to also happen though. An Ocean Aid single could be written, recorded and released and possibly to be followed by an album of songs written specially for it. The concert or concert series could all be recorded both as sound recordings and as visual footage that could be broadcast on worldwide TV and sold later as DVD releases.

Then there would be Ocean Aid merchandising. The possibilities are endless.

I am sure very many stars from the world of pop and rock music would be only too glad to be involved in this. Film stars and other celebrities could appear on stage at the concerts too as special guests.

It would of course be a lot of work organising all this that I have outlined here, but it has all been done before and to great success. I am presenting here the seed of the idea.

What is needed now is Sir Bob or someone else with the celebrity status and power to make this happen! Now are we going to make this happen? Who can help?

Just thinking of this awesome hub, I can feel a pain as if I myself, was Mother Earth, this is shameful and unacceptable, NO excused will I ever hear, our hearts are broken and our sorrow is deep, for all the live force that has been snuffed out. We need to be vigilante in all our future affords and who we allow to lead our country. Your fan rate up and all the above

I am scared of the ocean. She killed me once. But that does not mean I hate her. It is a power to reckon with. She has the ability to kill all of us, if she is mistreated.

Writing a song is an excellent idea. It must be a song that touches the string cords of the human heart. Melody allways wakes the primitive remembrance of origens.

I do hope we can get a song, that will be sung all over the world. Sloguns do not get repeated over and over and over again, but a good song does.

Bard, you are the bard of environmentalism... this is a great idea and we need to rally it into a real movement. Hub pages alone as 159K members who could throw a lot of fuel on the fire for Oil Spill Live... a summer of ocean fests promoting non-partisan clean-up efforts through volunteering, fund-raising, environmental activism, and the love of all things as spiritual as our oceans.

Environmental Activists:

Ed Begley. Jr, Paul Watson, David Suzuki, Ralph Nader, Al Gore, Jean-Michel Cousteau, Prince Charles, Ted Turner, George Clooney, Daryl Hannah, Julia Butterfly Hill, Leonardo DiCaprio, John Muir... as you said, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, World Wide Fund for Nature, Robert Redford, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Cameron Diaz, Rachel McAdams, Ted Danson, Alicia Silverstone, Orlando Bloom, Natalie Portman, Woody Harrelson, Hayden Panettiere, Ed Norton, Adrian Grenier, Dave Matthews Band, Willie Nelson, Cheryl Crow, Bonnie Rait, The Roots, BareNaked Ladies, Brushfire Records, Warner Music Group, Phish, Pearl Jam.

Where do we begin... do we have any six degrees of separation going on here?

We need a promoter... any ideas? Frances Beinecke, President of the NRDC Natural Resources Defense Council?

How do we get this out in front of fellow hubbers?

Count me in...

Thank you, KKalmes! "Where do we begin"? Here! How we proceed is another matter. I understand Bob Geldof got the band Aid recording underway by phoning around to his rock celeb friends but I am hardly in the same position. We need either a grassroots movement that becomes so big that it generates its own publicity and major interest from acts and sponsors etc or we need people with enough celeb and media clout to get behind it! Or both!

Sorry this is so important that I am bringing it back up. Things seem like they are getting a whole lot worse then any better. These animals and people NEED and are begging for our help.

It is far worse than we can imagine! Thanks for posting, Lady G! It is too late for billions of birds and sea creatures already killed by the oil and too late for the people who depend on the area for their way of life - it has gone!

It's a durn big shame that people who are more focused on money seem to realy mess up the world that we live in. I can see the cause and effect though and what they got they deserved.....only the habitats had to do the most suffering. A really big shame.

I think this is a great idea. I really do not have faith in BP, that they will do all they say they will do.

Hello Bard, I was thinking of pulling together a grass roots movement that collects money to bring workers to the areas for clean up efforts... supplying bus transportation, food and lodging allotments to these workers that bring trade to the local businesses, a minimum wage for those who can't afford to volunteer, and weekend entertainment that would draw crowds and tourism of a different sort to boost the economies of the areas.

Also left off my list entertainers and other celebrities from the Gulf region... James Carville, Lenny Kravitz, Lyle Lovett, Britney Spears, Ellen DeGeneres, Tyler Perry.

We need a promoter, someone who has the experience of a Woodstock, LiveAid, etc., I'm going to contact OFA (Organizing for America) the grassroots organization that elected Obama and will re-elect him in 2012. It seems we may have some mutual interest in bringing help, economic aid, and serious environmentalist volunteers to the area.

Excellent - good luck with your efforts on this! A celeb or even better celebs from the area could be a real help to this if they could be got involved!

Concert for O.C.E.A.N. [Oil Crisis Ecosystems Affected Now]is a philanthropic event to be held in South Carolina in October 2010. Outpouring of altruism wonderful, with folks donating live performances, publicity, and much more. It's already happening, Bard of Ely, and I'm the creator/event planner and--so far--with a ZERO operating budget. Soon will need sponsors, though...do you know how to get money for it? Check Facebook for Concert for O.C.E.A.N.--IT'S REAL! ~POSITIVE PURPOSE THROUGH MUSIC~

Excellent news, Devon! Good luck! I can't add any more at FB unless you send me a request cos am over the limits. Only way to get sponsors I know is keep promoting the event! If you want you can say David de Rothschild approves the idea and said to me re this hub via Twitter:

DRexplore: "like it!!! Very cool idea !"
